The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past Gives Geralt One More Adventure

More than a decade after The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt first sent Geralt across the Northern Kingdoms, CD Projekt Red is bringing him back for another major adventure. Songs of the Past is a new expansion coming in 2027, and its first trailer already shows that this is more than a small farewell quest.

This time Geralt travels with Dandelion to Letten, the bard's homeland, where the apparently peaceful region hides problems that require a witcher's attention. The expansion adds new monsters, mutations, more Gwent and a particularly interesting addition to Geralt's arsenal: a silver chain.

Geralt Is Going to Dandelion's Homeland

Songs of the Past takes the pair to Letten, giving CD Projekt Red another region to explore after Velen, Novigrad, Skellige and Toussaint. The first footage shows settlements, forests and plenty of evidence that the local situation isn't nearly as peaceful as it initially appears.

Dandelion's involvement also gives the expansion a different starting point from Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. This isn't simply another contract that becomes much larger than expected. Geralt is travelling to a place connected directly to one of his oldest friends, giving the story an opportunity to explore more of Dandelion's past alongside the new threat.

CDPR hasn't revealed every detail of the plot yet, but the expansion is being positioned as another substantial adventure rather than a short collection of quests.

The Silver Chain Changes Geralt's Combat

The most noticeable gameplay addition in the trailer is Geralt's new silver chain. Longtime Witcher fans may recognize the idea from the books and the original 2007 game, but Songs of the Past turns it into an actual combat tool.

Geralt can use the chain to control enemies and deal with groups, adding another option alongside his swords, Signs, bombs and crossbow. The footage shows him pulling an opponent toward himself, which immediately gives the weapon a different purpose from simply dealing more damage.

That could be particularly useful against the new monsters introduced in the expansion. Songs of the Past also adds new mutations, giving players more ways to adjust Geralt's build rather than returning with exactly the same abilities they were using years ago.

Yes, There's More Gwent

CD Projekt Red has also confirmed that Songs of the Past includes more Gwent. For anyone who repeatedly ignored urgent monster attacks because an innkeeper had a deck of cards, this may be the most important announcement of Gamescom.

More seriously, its return suggests that the expansion is interested in preserving the slower parts of The Witcher 3 alongside the new combat mechanics. Exploring settlements, talking to characters and finding distractions between major quests were a huge part of what made the original game memorable. Songs of the Past isn't trying to turn Geralt's return into a nonstop sequence of boss fights.

The Witcher 3 Is Changing Too

The expansion arrives alongside renewed attention for the base game. CD Projekt Red has also announced The Witcher 3 Remastered, a free upgrade for existing owners scheduled for September 29, 2026.

The remaster goes beyond sharper textures and improved lighting. CDPR is updating animations and combat, adding an adaptive camera, reworking skill trees and introducing transmog options. Mod support is also being expanded across platforms, while Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine will become available to owners of the base game.

Songs of the Past therefore arrives at an unusual moment. The Witcher 3 isn't simply receiving another quest eleven years later. CD Projekt Red is updating the game around it while preparing the series for its next generation. Geralt may no longer be the future of The Witcher, but apparently he still has one more story to tell.
