Marathon Dodges the PSN Account Requirement, Sets Sights on Open Cross-Play

Bungie's Marathon isn't just sprinting towards the extraction shooter finish line; it's vaulting over the hurdles of past mistakes, specifically the PSN-shaped obstacle that tripped up Helldivers 2. In a move that screams "we're listening," Bungie has confirmed that Marathon will not require a PlayStation Network account on PC or Xbox. Consider that a victory lap for accessibility and common sense.

Sidestepping the PSN Quicksand: A Lesson Learned

Remember the Helldivers 2 debacle? The mandatory PSN linking for PC players sparked a firestorm of backlash, especially in regions where PSN access is about as common as a unicorn sighting. Arrowhead eventually reversed course, but the PR damage was done, leaving a stain on their record.

Bungie, however, seems to have absorbed the lesson. Their message on the official Marathon Discord was clear and concise:

"Marathon will not require a PlayStation Account for players on PC and Xbox."

After a period of relative silence following its May 2023 unveiling, Marathon is finally breaking cover.  And a select few will get their hands dirty in a closed alpha test starting April 23rd. Consider it a sneak peek into the heart of Marathon's extraction-based mayhem.

Marathon: Everything You Need to Know

  • Genre: A multiplayer extraction shooter that reimagines Bungie's classic sci-fi IP. Assemble your crew of three "Runners" and plunge into the perilous depths of Tau Ceti IV, where fortune favors the bold (and the quick on the trigger).

  • Launch Date: September 23rd on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X. Get ready to extract some loot!

  • Business Model: Contrary to the whispers, Marathon is a paid title. The price tag remains a mystery, but expect more details soon.

  • Cross-Play & Cross-Save: Seamless integration across all platforms from day one. Team up with friends, regardless of their gaming ecosystem.

  • Launch Content: Six playable characters and three maps will greet you at launch, followed shortly by a fourth, "raid-like" map set aboard the iconic UESC Marathon ship.

  • Seasonal Shake-Ups: Brace for seasonal resets every three months, ensuring a constantly evolving world and a fresh injection of content to keep you hooked.

The Ghost of Destiny, a New Kind of Beast

Marathon carries the torch of Bungie's legendary gunplay, refined through years of Halo and Destiny, but ignites it within the explosive framework of an extraction shooter. Early whispers praise the "elegant, refined" shooting mechanics, but warn that the hardcore PvPvE focus might not be everyone's cup of tea.

In the end, Marathon is striving for a delicate balance: the visceral thrill of top-tier shooting intertwined with the strategic tension of risk and reward. And by ditching the PSN requirement, Bungie has flung open the doors to a wider audience, ensuring everyone can join the fight for survival on Tau Ceti IV. Now that's a launch strategy worth celebrating.
