The Witcher 4 Showcase Hints at Playable Ciri, Famed Manticores, and a Vast New Kingdom Built in Unreal Engine 5

Yesterday’s State of Unreal 2025 broadcast felt less like a tech talk and more like a magic trick: CD Projekt Red conjured an entire kingdom out of thin air, dropped a legendary monster into our laps, and handed the spotlight to Ciri with a wink that all but screams, “You’re driving this time.” Grab a swallow potion—things just got interesting.

A Predator in the Pines

The demo opens with moon-silver fog, jangling wagon chains, and the low heartbeat thump of hooves. Then—boom—talons rake the canvas roof, passengers scatter, and the camera snaps to a pair of wings blotting out the stars. Not a griffin. Not a wyvern. A manticore—the lion-bodied, scorpion-tailed nightmare the games have teased since Wild Hunt’s cut-content leaks. This is the first time we’ve seen it, and it’s already chewing on smugglers like sweetmeats.

Cut to daylight: Ciri, dust-streaked but unflinching, informs a jittery merchant that his “salt shipment” is splinters. She couldn’t care less about contraband; the beast that flattened his carts is her quarry now. The message is loud: forgotten creatures are stalking the Northern Kingdoms again, and Ciri intends to thin the herd.

Ciri: From Side-Quest Cameo to Center Stage

Geralt’s gravelly baritone is nowhere to be found in this slice. Instead, every shot gravitates toward Cirilla Fiona Elen Riannon—now older, scar-wiser, and seemingly the point-of-view character. She tests the reins of a sleek black mare, vaults a crumbling aqueduct, and glides through crowds that part like wheat around a scythe. If the White Wolf taught us to track footprints, Ciri may teach us to bend space itself.

Welcome to Kovir, Land of Gold and Gales

For lore hounds, the true bombshell is the backdrop: Kovir & Poviss—that miser-to-merchant fairy tale kingdom mentioned in footnotes for years. Picture jagged seaside cliffs garlanded with gulls; sun-dappled vineyards carved into terraces; forges belching sparks beneath frosted peaks. The demo tours fish markets in Port Vanis, copper mines above Lan Exeter, and lonely watchtowers shrouded in alpine mist. It’s the richest realm in the North, and CD Projekt Red looks determined to show every coin’s glint.

Why UE5 Makes This Hunt Feel Next-Generation

  • Nanite + Lumen tandem – hyper-dense geometry and real-time global illumination with zero pop-in as the camera barrels after Ciri.

  • Crowd/animation overhaul – 300+ fully rigged NPCs tracked at once, leaving headroom for swordplay, Signs, and branching AI.

  • Lightning-fast world streaming – blink-free transitions from mountain ridge to harbor pier; no sneaky tunnel loads.

  • Locked 60 FPS on current consoles – muscle-mapped horses and ray-traced armor reflections without a single hitch.

Epic’s Wyeth Johnson calls it “breathing room for devs.” CD Projekt Red’s Sebastian Kalemba calls it “no compromise.” Whatever the label, the result looks fluid, dense, and startlingly alive.

The Road Ahead

We still don’t know when we’ll wield our first silver blade in Kovir—or how Geralt might fit into Ciri’s chapter. But the studio has planted three firm stakes in the ground:

  • Manticores and other shelved legends are back on the menu.

  • Kovir is playable from cliff to coin-vault, not just a postcard.

  • 60 FPS is non-negotiable, even on console hardware.

If CD Projekt Red hits those marks, The Witcher 4 won’t just raise the bar for open-world RPGs—it’ll toss it into a portal and catch it on the other side. Pack your saddle-bags, study your bestiary, and keep an eye on the skies. The Lady of Time and Space is ready to lead the hunt, and the monsters have never looked hungrier.
