007 First Light Launches to Strong Reviews While Sales Raise Questions

007 First Light officially releases on May 27, 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, with global launch timing set for 2 PM UTC. Early access started a day earlier on May 26 for everyone who pre-ordered the game, giving players a full 24 hours before standard release.

So far, critics seem far more excited than many expected. IGN, Eurogamer, The Guardian, and Polygon are all praising IO Interactive’s take on Bond, with several outlets already calling it the strongest James Bond game in more than a decade.

IO Interactive Brings Hitman Experience Without Copying Hitman Completely

The biggest concern before launch was obvious: would First Light just feel like Hitman wearing a tuxedo? Reviews suggest the answer is mostly no. The DNA is still there — stealth, social manipulation, flexible mission structure — but the pacing is much faster and more cinematic than IO’s previous games.

Bond moves through missions with more momentum, and the game leans harder into chase sequences, hand-to-hand combat, and scripted set pieces. Several critics compared parts of the experience to Uncharted or modern action thrillers rather than pure stealth sandboxes.

At the same time, IO avoids turning Bond into another generic blockbuster protagonist. This younger version of the character feels rougher, less controlled, and more reckless than the polished movie interpretation players already know. And honestly, that probably helps. Watching a younger Bond improvise through bad situations is more interesting than watching another untouchable superspy effortlessly solve everything in a tailored suit.

The Technical Side Is Getting Almost Universal Praise

One area where First Light seems consistently strong is presentation. Digital Foundry described the game as a technical standout on PS5 and PS5 Pro, while console players are reporting stable performance during large action scenes and dense environments. PC impressions are also relatively positive outside of some backlash around the late Denuvo announcement.

That stability matters because the game depends heavily on atmosphere. IO spends a lot of time letting players sit inside expensive casinos, luxury hotels, crowded markets, and formal diplomatic events before missions inevitably collapse into complete disaster. The world needs to feel convincing for the spy fantasy to work, and according to most reviews, it does.

Strong Reviews Do Not Automatically Guarantee a Huge Launch

The more complicated story is commercial performance. Early sales tracking reportedly looks softer than expected despite the critical reception. Part of that may come from timing, but part of it may also come from the game itself. First Light is slower and more deliberate than many players probably expected from a modern Bond game, especially in marketing that emphasized explosions and spectacle.

But that slower pacing is also exactly why critics seem to like it. IO Interactive is treating Bond as a spy first and an action hero second — which sounds obvious, yet somehow became rare in big-budget games. And after years where licensed titles either played things painfully safe or disappeared into live-service chaos, First Light at least feels like it knows what kind of game it wants to be.
