Mafia: The Old Country – Man of Honor Gives Sicily More Reason to Explore

Mafia: The Old Country already gave players a convincing slice of early 20th-century Sicily. The problem was finding enough reasons to stay there once the story stopped pulling you forward.

Man of Honor looks ready to address that. Alongside two new story chapters centered on a young Ennio Salieri, the expansion adds more activities, locations and criminal work to Free Ride. It is a sensible direction for a game that already has the world. Now Hangar 13 simply needs to make better use of it.

Sicily Was Too Good to Leave Behind

The Old Country was designed primarily as a narrative-driven Mafia game, and that focus gave the campaign its momentum. It also meant that exploration often played second fiddle to Enzo's story. Free Ride offered more freedom, but freedom only goes so far when there isn't enough trouble waiting around the next corner.

Man of Honor expands that side of the game with new locations and additional activities. Instead of merely giving players another excuse to admire Sicilian roads from behind the wheel, the expansion puts more actual work on them. Considering who is handing out the jobs, declining probably isn't recommended.

Salieri Turns Free Ride Into a Criminal Career

The young Ennio Salieri isn't limited to the new campaign chapters. His contracts extend into Free Ride, where players can take on jobs involving smuggling, vehicle theft, infiltration, eliminating rivals and cracking safes. There are also new challenges for players interested in pushing the game's driving and combat systems further.

These activities might sound like familiar open-world business, but they serve an important purpose here. They give players reasons to interact with systems that the main campaign could only use when the story demanded them. Cars become useful beyond travelling between missions. Weapons and stealth have more room to shine outside scripted encounters. Previously unexplored corners of the map can finally host something more dangerous than sightseeing.

Enzo Gets More Toys for the Job

Hangar 13 is expanding the sandbox itself as well. Man of Honor introduces additional weapons, knives, vehicles and Charms, giving Enzo more options both during the new chapters and while completing activities in Free Ride.

None of this suggests The Old Country is suddenly turning into a gigantic checklist-driven open world, and that's probably for the best. Mafia has traditionally worked because its worlds support the story rather than constantly fighting for the player's attention.

Man of Honor seems to be looking for a middle ground. There is more freedom and more to discover, but the activities still fit Enzo's life inside organized crime.

Story and Sandbox Finally Work Together

That's what makes the expansion more interesting than a simple content drop. Salieri connects both halves of Man of Honor. His past drives the new story while his contracts provide additional work outside it. The result could make the expansion feel less like two campaign chapters with some extras attached and more like a natural extension of The Old Country.

The original game already built its version of Sicily. Man of Honor now has the easier, and arguably more entertaining, job of filling it with reasons to get into trouble.
