GTA V Players Finally Got the Free Upgrade They've Been Asking For

If there was one complaint that kept following GTA V for years, it was the paid upgrade to the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S version.

When Rockstar released the enhanced edition in 2022, existing owners weren't given a free path to the new version. Instead, players were asked to purchase the game again. While most people agreed that the improvements were real, many questioned why they had to pay extra for a title that had already been re-released so many times.

Upgrading Is Now Free

Players still on PS4 and eligible Xbox One versions can now make the switch to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S for free. Better yet, Rockstar isn't asking anyone to start over — Story Mode saves, GTA Online characters, properties, and progression all carry across. 

The announcement arrives at a notable moment for the franchise. New GTA Online content is on the way, and GTA 6 is only months from release. Against that backdrop, opening up free upgrades feels like a natural step rather than a random act of generosity.

There's More Reason Than Ever To Upgrade

Back in 2022, the differences between versions weren't a dealbreaker for everyone. Today, that's a different story. Players on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S get access to better performance, shorter loading screens, enhanced visuals, and GTA Online features that simply aren't available on older hardware.

For some players, this free upgrade will be the first real reason to make the switch. The improvements have been there for years, but the extra cost kept many people from bothering.

Arriving Just Before GTA 6
